Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the beginning, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, contemporary urban housing. It had the first tunnel kilns in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, allowing greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding its operations overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products of manufacturers to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm's market share.
In the 1990s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and boost profits. The company embraced a just-in time method of managing supply chains and used the same methodology for its sales process. This resulted in a greater level of satisfaction with the customer.
Toto has continued to innovate on the toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example, has a powerful tornado flush that is more ecologically friendly than conventional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water for its manufacturing process, and has a green buying policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than standard models.
The first museum of the company was opened in the year 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's seminal products and their development, its group companies (all related to ceramics), history of plumbing and other products like bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has a bathroom that includes a WASHLET toilet as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
